The Victorian Government is reviewing the way that water is managed in Melbourne.
The government-owned metropolitan water businesses – City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water and Melbourne Water – are contributing to this work.
Over the past six months we have sought your views on:
- Reviewing water restrictions and permanent water rules.
- Considering a different approach to how we make decisions about water in Melbourne.
- Developing a long-term Water Supply & Demand Strategy that balances the supply of water to meet Melbourne's residential, business and environmental water needs.
The statewide review of water restrictions and permanent water rules is now complete and the Victorian Government has adopted the recommendations to ensure there is consistency across the state. This means watering days and times and restrictions for the use of watering systems are easier to understand. The Drought Response and Permanent Water Saving Plans for the metropolitan water utilities are now in place.
We're also releasing a Water Outlook which is a new adaptive approach to water management in Melbourne. The Outlook will be released annually and considers not just dam levels, but also forecast weather, catchment conditions, trends in demand and the performance of the water supply system and water efficiency programs.
